Before partition it there was a steady growth in this sector and the people saw an increase of number of mills, from 24 in 1884 to 76 by 1919.


It was all going great, until the partition. Mainly the jute manufacturing was set up in West Bengal before partition; then Bangladesh. But, soon after the partition majority of jute mills were lost by the country, and hence India suffered great loss then. Gradually, since then the country has been reshaping the jute industry and making lives better.

Leaving apart the history, you will be surprised to know that now there are 78 jute mills in India, and they are enough to rein the international standard. These mills have helped the country to reach the number one position in the world. Yes, you heard it right! Currently, India is the largest producer of Jute in the world.
